Noel Clarke, in 2019 at a BAFTA party. (Jamie Simonds/BAFTA)
First things first: How on earth did the BAFTAs not see Noel Clarke in their rear view mirror? The British actor-filmmaker had been rumored by a number of people including those close to some of the 20 women who spoke to The Guardian newspaper to have sexually harassed, bullied and groped these women in the course of his work in front of and behind the camera.
BAFTA, who knew of the allegations against Noel Clarke, nonetheless gave Clarke a special award for Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema on April 10. Three weeks later (after the April 29, 2021) Guardian story (may be triggering for some) in which the 20 women came forward with powerful and compelling experiences of the harassment and abuse they allege — BAFTA cancelled (revoked) the award from Clarke.
Shouldn’t all awards bodies revoke awards from alleged and actual abusers or should this be a case-by-case examination?
