What is to be gained for President Biden in debating a pathological liar and narcissistic sociopath?
And a twice-impeached, convicted 34-count felon, to boot

Where is the upside for President Joe Biden in debating the cretin, pathological liar, narcissistic sociopath, rapist, traitor, convicted felon and racist in this photo?
You will have to look hard to find that upside tonight in Atlanta.
President Biden will not only be on an unsteady debate field by debating a sick, petulant, destructive and dedicated calumniator, he will also be up against the juvenile framings and cynical expectations of a sensationalist, 24-7-mentioning of an insurrectionist pundit class and corporate news media at large who bring political discourse down to the unintelligent, unsophisticated level of Orange Felon 34. In other words, there is zero upside tonight for President Biden (is there an upside to debating horse manure?) unless he clearly and succinctly draws contrasts with his scurrilous opponent (that should be easy), states his own accomplishments and conveys how they’ve helped those who watch tonight. President Biden must also concisely outline what his vision is for the next four years. Tonight will be the largest television audience he will have (or the chuntering media will provide him) until August at the Democratic convention in Chicago.
The corporate news media folk at CNN, which hosts the debate in a few short hours, will not be factchecking the 30,573 times-lying ex-White House occupant Orange Felon 34 in real-time. Add to this lament a dastardly duo of weak news anchors in Dana Bash and Jake Tapper who very rarely if ever pushback against Republican guests on their own Sunday show (they pushback far more aggressively against Democratic politicians) and you have a recipe for the disaster that I predict tonight’s debate will be.
Fact-checking is one of the bedrocks of journalism. Sources are factchecked. And if those sources aren’t reliable they cannot be utilized in the research and reporting of a news story. Other than say Orange Felon 34 is lying, President Biden cannot be expected to debate and factcheck the criminal at the lectern across from him at the same time. That is left to the CNN crew—and in real-time. Daniel Dale’s post-debate factchecking, thorough as it is, will not suffice, as most of the millions of people watching in the U.S. will have already gone to bed or tuned to another channel.
For the record I will be fact-checking this debate in real-time. I expect that others may (and should) do so. CNN’s standards are so poor both journalistically and ethically. Their ratings have tanked. They, like much of the US corporate news media, have become an island of irrelevance. In an act of what can only be blatant racism CNN (located in heavily Black-populated Atlanta) have not given any members of the Black press media credentials to cover tonight’s debate. The right-wingers and other assorted white racists who have the control and say at the network that once boasted Bernard Shaw remain hostile, defiant and intransigent to the bitter end.
So in closing, why are people really watching tonight’s debate?
I believe people will watch tonight not to make up their minds—but to see a train wreck. To see who slips up, trips up or fucks up. The notion that debates are watched to sway a person’s voting choice is a somewhat foolhardy one. You cannot evaluate 30-second soundbite answers as determinative factors in a critical decision-making vote the result of which will impact your life and the lives of your family members. You need to read, analyze and evaluate policy positions taken by the candidates. Those positions represent the candidates far better than the words they will say under the intense glare of media lights.
The Orange Felon has Project 2025. The President of the United States Joe Biden has three and a half years of accomplishments that have helped millions of people. This stark comparison isn’t even a choice—and the well-endowed corporate news media television networks you watch know better—but their rich owners and high-priced executives have other more pressing financial interests. (Les Moonves said it best.) The corporate news media’s incentive is to tell you this 2024 presidential election is a close contest by utilizing polls (which are always under and oversampled and ultimately unreliable—just ask Hillary Clinton.)
I am confident that come November 5 people in the United States won’t make the same mistake Pontius Pilate made centuries ago. Today’s Barabbas is too orange, too heinous and too much of a clear and present danger to you and the very existence of the country for that mistake to repeat itself. And while Joe Biden ain’t Jesus Christ by a long shot (and who the hell on earth is?)—he is the right American president for these turbulent times across the globe.
